Which filter method is right for me?
That depends on the kind of coffee drinker you are.
Love the ritual? Go for a V60. Brewing for a crowd? Chemex has you covered. Need something that'll happily travel from kitchen to campsite? AeroPress is your new best mate. Want consistently great coffee at the push of a button? A drip filter machine is hard to beat.
Whichever you choose, it's less about the brewer and more about enjoying the journey to a better cup.
What is filter coffee?
Filter coffee is made by passing hot water through ground coffee and a paper or metal filter, producing a clean, balanced cup that lets the coffee do the talking.
Unlike espresso, which is brewed under pressure, filter coffee takes its time. The slower extraction brings out more of the coffee's natural character, making it a great way to explore different origins, roast profiles and processing methods.
What's the best coffee for filter brewing?
The honest answer? The one you enjoy drinking.
Lighter and medium roasts are a great place to start if you love bright, fruity flavours, while darker roasts lean more towards chocolate, caramel and nuts.
There's no right answer — just plenty of tasty ones.
How should I grind coffee for filter coffee?
Think Goldilocks: not too fine, not too coarse.
A medium grind works for most filter brewers, though methods like the V60 prefer things a touch finer, while a Chemex or cafetière likes a coarser grind.
No grinder? No worries.We'll happily grind your coffee for filter brewing before it leaves the roastery.
What coffee-to-water ratio should I use?
A good starting point is 60g of coffee per litre of water (or around 15g for a 250ml mug).
From there, make it yours. Like your coffee with a bit more oomph? Add a little more coffee. Prefer something a touch lighter? Dial it back.
Rules are helpful but your taste buds get the final say.
What's the difference between filter coffee and pour over coffee?
It's a bit like squares and rectangles.
All pour over coffee is filter coffee, but not all filter coffee is pour over.
"Filter coffee" covers any brew made by passing water through coffee and a filter, while "pour over" is the manual version using brewers like the V60, Kalita Wave or Chemex.
