Coffee Beans

Which are the best coffee beans?

Arabica beans are some of the most popular in the world, but there's no such thing as the "best" coffee bean. People have different tastes, meaning that what one person thinks is a fantastic coffee bean may be a little disappointing to the next person.

Coffee is graded on size and a widely accepted definition of speciality coffee is coffee scoring 80 points or above on a 100-point scale.  Here at Rave we only sell coffee that is graded 82+ or above.

What are the 4 types of coffee beans?

There are two commercially traded types of coffee bean that we sell at RAVE. Arabica beans are the most common and have a smoother & sweeter taste. Robusta beans have a more bitter, woody flavour - they're typically used in instant coffees or for espresso as they tend to be cheaper than Arabica beans. The level of caffeine differs between the two varieties too - Robusta has higher caffeine and therefore is more likely to give you a boost.

There are other types such as Liberica and Excelsa, however these are lesser known.

What are the most popular coffee beans?

Arabica is the most popular coffee bean in the world, accounting for over fifty percent of the global coffee harvest. Robusta beans are popular too but are mainly used in instant coffees or for espresso. Liberica and Excelsa beans are very rare, which means that they're far less well-known and less widely used.

How long do coffee beans stay fresh for?

We put a roast date and batch number on all our roasted coffee – we recommend drinking & enjoying your coffee within 3 months of the roast date. You can still drink the coffee for up to a year however the coffee flavours will change and become muted over time. The best way to keep your coffee beans fresh is to store them in an airtight container, away from any light, moisture or strong smells.

What should I look for when buying coffee beans?

Always check for a roast date on the packaging, without this you have no way of knowing how long the coffee has been sat on the shelf.

Don’t be afraid to try new tastes and flavours - broaden your coffee horizons. Roast levels & strength will differ across all roasteries -  these are only meant to serve as a guide.

Always look for a supplier that has excellent reviews and a good selection of beans. Rave Coffee are committed to ethical sourcing of beans and ensuring farmers/producers recieve a fair price -  without compromising quality (We also are part of 1% for the planet, read more here (link)).

What can you use coffee beans for?

The most obvious use for Coffee beans is to grind them to make a fresh brew, There are many items of equipment that will help you to do this – AeroPress, French Press or Pour Ove/Filter. You can even use them for home-made chocolate or other recipes or simply to garnish your espresso martini!

But let’s not stop there, used coffee grounds can be used for body scrubs or added to your garden compost to add nutrients to the soil.

Which country has the best coffee?

Brazil is the largest coffee bean exporter in the world, with over 10 million bags of beans exported every year. The country is known for its tropical climate, which means that Arabica beans are able to grow there without too much trouble. Saying that though, our most popular single origin coffees come from Colombia, followed by Guatemala and Africa.

Which coffee bean is the healthiest?

Most coffee beans are known to be healthy, especially when drunk black. Arabica coffee beans have often been championed due to the number of antioxidants they contain. This doesn't mean that Robusta and other coffee beans are unhealthy, though. For health advice, always consult with a medical professional.

Is it better to buy ground coffee or beans?

Ground coffee that is stored for a long time doesn't have as much flavour or aroma as unground beans do, although buying ground coffee is more convenient for most people. At Rave, our coffee is ground within 24 hours of being shipped, so it retains as much fresh flavour as possible.

How long does 1kg of coffee beans last?

This will depend on how you are brewing your coffee.

As a rough guide, if you are making espresso we recommend 18g coffee for a double shot  (= 55 cups) & 9g coffee for a single shot  (= 110 cups)

For filter or immersion brew methods we recommend 15g per 250ml cup (= 66 cups)

Which brand of coffee is best?

Rave Coffee is the best brand of coffee in the world (at least according to our wonderful customers!) In fairness, saying which brand of coffee is the best is like saying which chocolate bar is the best. It really depends on your personal preference, but there are some brands of coffee that are known for having more flavour than others.

What is the most expensive coffee?

Kopi Luwak coffee is famed for being the most expensive type of coffee in the world. Although the production of this coffee raises many ethical questions and actually can be seen as more of a gimmick.

In recent years Panama Geisha coffee has been hailed the most expensive coffee in the world. It is a high-end coffee that grows in the highland areas of Panama (The beans originated in Ethiopia but suit the Panama environment). In 2019, the Lamastus family sold the Elida Geisha coffee for $1,029 per pound.

What region produces the best coffee flavour?

Many people find that the best tasting kinds of coffee come from Colombia. Colombian beans are typically strong and aromatic, with a good body, making them perfect for most coffee drinkers. However, everyone has different tastes, so what one person finds to be the best coffee flavour isn't necessarily the same for the next.

Coffee flavours are influenced by origin, processing, varietal, growing conditions like altitude and finally the roasting process. So you can quickly see that most roasters will sell a Colombian coffee but it doesn’t mean they will all taste the same.

How do you tell the difference between Arabica and Robusta?

Arabica and Robusta look very similar, with only subtle differences in shape and central split. When it comes to taste, Arabica tends to be smoother with a slightly sweeter flavour. Robusta coffees have a more bitter taste and are not as aromatic. Robusta beans also contain more caffeine than Arabica beans do.

How do I find the perfect coffee?

The best way to find the perfect coffee for your taste is to take a coffee quiz. This will take into account how you prefer to make your coffee, caffeine tolerance and if you like it with milk. Rave Coffee has a coffee quiz here.

Common Coffee Bean Questions

Why do people drink Robusta?

Robusta is cheap and often used in products like instant coffee, it has a much higher caffeine content and due to it’s bitter character is often roasted darker to make it more palatable. Most speciality roasters will only use Robusta in blends - Here at Rave we only put a small amount in out Italian Job Blend.

Is Arabica coffee better for you?

Both Arabica and Robusta coffees contain antioxidants, but Arabica coffee contains less caffeine, which is why some people prefer it over Robusta.

Can you brew coffee beans without grinding them?

Technically, yes—but we wouldn’t recommend it. That’s because grinding increases the surface area of the beans, allowing the hot water to access the oils and aromatics they contain. While it’s theoretically possible to extract these same things from whole beans, it would take an awfully long time!

Is dark coffee healthy?

All coffee beans contain antioxidants, dark roasted coffee contain more caffeine by weight. It's up to you which type of dark roast you prefer, as some people find they have a better taste and aroma than the lighter ones. But overall, no: neither is better for your health than the other.

Is dark coffee bad for you?

Dark coffee does contain more caffeine than lighter roasts, but it also contains high levels of antioxidants. Overall, neither light or dark roasts are better for you than the other when drunk black… if you’re adding syrups, sugar and milk to your drink, then yes that is going to make is slightly more unhealthy for you.

What is the best way to grind coffee beans?

The best way to grind coffee beans is using a burr grinder. This crushes the beans instead of slicing them, and it also produces more uniform results than other kinds. If you don't have a burr grinder then you can use a blender or a blade grinder, but these simply aren’t as good.

Should I grind coffee beans daily?

Yes we highly recommend getting in the habit of only grinding what you need just before you brew for the best possible results. As soon as you grind coffee and decrease the particle size the coffee will degrade quicker.

We appreciate buying whole beans and grinding on demand isn’t possible for everyone, so if you are buying pre-ground just ensure you are storing it as air tight as possible whether that is resealing the bag properly or decanting into a suitable container.

How long do coffee beans stay fresh for?

Coffee beans are best used within 3 months of the roast date but are drinkable for up to a year post roast – however they will seriously loose flavour and aroma over time.

How many coffee beans should I grind per cup?

This all depends on how strong you like your coffee and how you are brewing.  We always recommending weighing your coffee and water dose so you can find the sweet spot that suits your taste.

The Golden Ratio – Filter / Pour Over / Immersion Brewing

A good starting point is 1:15 so for every 1g of coffee you need 15ml of water.

How to calculate this for different size cups/mugs?

If you’re using an 225ml cup (8oz):

225 / 15 = 15  (you will need 15g of coffee to 225ml water)

If you find 1:15 too weak you can decrease the ratio – try 1:14

225 / 14 = 16 (you will need 16g of coffee to 225 ml of water

If you find 1:15 too strong > Increase your ratio - try 1:16

225 / 16 = 14 (you will need 14g of coffee to 225ml water)

What is the history of coffee beans?

The history of coffee begins centuries ago—in the 15th century, to be exact. Coffee beans were first exported around the world from Ethiopia and were traded by Arabian merchants across Asia and Europe. Originally the exclusive product of the merchants was spread to the colonies, where it was grown in South America and the Caribbean, breaking their monopoly. From then, it only became more popular—which is why coffee is arguably the world’s favourite drink today.

Common Coffee Bean Questions

What is the most popular coffee bean?

The most popular coffee bean by far is the Arabica, which is the kind used in coffee shops and kitchens up and down the country. Robusta is often used in blends to give a stronger taste and higher caffeine.

How do you drink coffee for beginners?

Start with our Signature BlendNo.1 - this is one of our originals blends that was designed to be suitable for all brew methods - It’s a medium/dark roast with tasting notes of Chocolate, Caramel & Nuts. It’s a great starting point and introduction to Rave Coffee.

It works well in milk based drinks like a latte or cappuccino, the flavour will carry through the milk. If drinking as filter it works well black or with a splash of milk. If this isn't quite to your taste then you can try a darker or lighter roast next.

Which coffee should I buy?

Rave’s blends are the staple of our offering, developed to be suitable for all brew methods – these tend to be roasted medium / dark. And are available all year around. These are a great starting point to finds out what you like.

Our single origin offering will come and go throughout the year depending on crops and harvests, so you may find something you like but it could only be around for a short while.

If you are a tea drinker and new to coffee you may enjoy a light roasted coffee which will be fruity and aromatic.

What is a good coffee that is not bitter?

A medium roasted Arabica is a pretty safe bet, if you look at our blends the ones around a medium roast will be balanced in terms of flavour. Bitterness develops the longer you roast the beans so any darker roasts may not be to your taste. You may want to avoid and blends that include Robusta - as this has bitter characteristics. We only have one coffee with Robusta in it our Italian Job Blend No.2

It’s important to remember that taste is very subjective - and can change depending on your brew method - over extraction (water and coffee sitting together too long) can lead to undesirable bitter notes in the cup. The Brew taking too long will be a result of too fineer grind, or water that’s too hot, which will result in an unpleasant experience. We recommend only changing one thing at a time and make notes on what worked so you can replicate it again and again.

Which coffee beans are naturally sweet?

Natural or honey processed coffees are naturally sweeter than washed processed coffees - this is because some or all of the coffee cherry has been left intact and will part it’s sweetness to the coffee bean/seed within.

Lighter roasts may be more acidic so the sweetness is less obvious. But they are generally fruity in flavour and will therefore give you perceived sweetness.

Medium roasts are generally sweeter as they have started to caramelise in the roasting process.

Our fudge blend has beautiful sweetness and when you use it in the flat white you get full fudgeyness! (We do not add any flavourings to our coffee) this is natural flavour developed through the roasting process.

If making milk-based drinks with a steam wand (flat white, Latte, cappuccino) , if the milk is steamed correctly you should release the natural sugars within the milk - therefore resulting in a sweeter tasting coffee.

How long do coffee beans last in the bag once opened?

As long as you ensure the bag is properly sealed (and airtight) after each use - the coffee beans will be at their best for up to 3 months - the more air they are exposed to the quicker they will loose flavour and character.

Can I put coffee beans in a jar?

Yes, you can, so long as the jar has an airtight seal. We also recommend storing the jar in a cool, dry place.Remember light will affect the rate in which coffee degrades so an opaque storage container is best.

Which coffee is best for brain?

People often drink coffee to get a quick boost of energy and concentration. Dark roasts have more caffeine by weight, although light roasts still pack plenty of punch too.

Which is healthier Robusta or Arabica?

Robusta beans contain more coffee than Arabica. That being said, in terms of health effects, neither is that different to the other. If you are interested in improving your health, talk to a medical professional.

Robusta beans contain more caffeine than Arabica. That being said, in terms of health effects, neither is that different to the other. If you are interested in improving your health, talk to a medical professional.

Which is better Robusta or Arabica?

Arabica beans are broadly viewed as better. Robusta are less chemically complex than Abarica and therefore dont have much flavour - when roasted lightly you may experience woody or flat flavours. Robusta is often blended with Abarica and used in darker roasts which results in a stronger tasting coffee with a higher caffein content.

Are coffee beans healthy?

Coffee beans contain important antioxidants, but also, of course, caffeine. Research shows up to 3 cups of coffee a day (drunk black) could be providing many health benefits to your body.

If you struggle to sleep because of caffeine in your system, then avoid drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening. It takes about 15-45 minutes for the body to absorb caffeine but can take anywhere up to 10 hours or more to be eliminate from the body.

Can I boil coffee beans to make coffee?

In short no. When brewing coffee water temperature plays a key role in the extraction of coffee, too hot and your coffee can burn, and taste bitter. Making coffee with whole beans takes a long time and produces worse results than using grounds.

Can coffee beans be ground in a blender?

While they can, you run the risk of seriously damaging your blender. It's also unlikely that you'll get the most out of your coffee grounds because they won’t be evenly fine. If coffee grinds are uneven you run the risk of over or under extracting your brew.

Can you brew coffee beans without grinding them?

No, you need to grind them before brewing. If you don’t have a grinder it’s better to buy ground coffee from a reputable roaster who provides a Roast date, like Rave.

Can you use ground coffee as instant?

No, you can't. Ground coffee won't dissolve in the same way as instant coffee. Instant coffee is produced by making a coffee concentrate - freeze drying this and processing it to granules/powder removing the need for filtration or extraction when brewing.

Next up is electric grinders which are best if making more than one cup of coffee at a time.

What difference does coffee grind make?

Coffee grind is of the utmost importance when it comes to making a decent cup of coffee. A finely ground bean will lead to a more refined and smooth drink, whilst an un-even or coarsely ground bean will result in a bitter drink. Which you prefer is up to you.

The grind size is of the utmost importance when it comes to making a decent cup of coffee.

To use the sand and pebble analogy. Water passing through pebbles will find the gaps and pass through quickly, if you pour water over sand it will take longer to find a path through as there are less gaps. The same applies to coffee. If your coffee is too coarse than the water will pass through too quickly leading to weak and under extracted coffee. If your grind is too fine the water will sit with the coffee for longer leading to over extracted and a bitter taste.

A rough guide:

FINE: Espresso

FINE - MEDIUM: Espresso & Stove Top / Moka Pot

MEDIUM: Filter Brew Methods (Stronger taste)

MEDIUM - COARSE: Filter Brew Methods (Weaker taste)

COARSE: Cafetiere/ French Press

An AeroPress is a method by which you can make an espresso style coffee, but due to the limited pressure, and filter it won’t have the thick texture and crema that is created by using an espresso machine.

Which is better V60 or AeroPress?

This will depend on how you enjoy your coffee. The v60 takes a little more practise to get right whereas the AeroPress is much more forgiving brew method.

What grind is best for AeroPress?

Is AeroPress better than Nespresso?

Both AeroPress and Nespresso machines can create an incredible cup of coffee. Nespresso Coffee machines are electric and use pods of coffee to create an espresso shot.

No, AeroPress is not toxic. Using an AeroPress will not damage your health.

What's the difference between AeroPress and Chemex?

Chemex is an hourglass-shaped glass vessel for making a filter/pour over coffee. AeroPress, on the other hand, is more compact and portable device that can be used anywhere.

Chemex will give you a cleaner, brighter cup of coffee due to the thicker filter paper used and pour over method of brewing more suited to lighter roasted coffee.

choose to brew. Acidity can be impacted by the steep time and grind size also.

Is AeroPress better than plunger?

Both AeroPress and French press (or plunger) are efficient ways of creating an excellent coffee cup. The main benefits of using an AeroPress is that you can use one anywhere, they’re easy to use and simple to clean. You will also find less sediment in your cup as the AeroPress benefits from going throught a filter.

Can you use cafetiere coffee in an AeroPress?

If you are buying Cafetiere grind from Rave this is a coarse grind and using this in the AeroPress will create a weaker cup of coffee. You can of course steep for longer to aid better extraction, but we recommend getting the grind right - so opt for a Medium size grind.

Is AeroPress as good as an espresso machine?

These two things are very different brew methods. An AeroPress is great for creating a longer filter style brew, it can be used to make a shorter Espresso style drink and you can buy additional attachments to help achieve a more familiar espresso shot.

An AeroPress would struggle to match the pressure achieved by an Espresso machine and the resulting crema and syrup like qualities of an espresso shot created with an espresso machine. Espresso machines are expensive and you may find you require additional gadgets and tools. The AeroPress comes with everything you need. But it’s important to remember that they create two different cups of coffee so aren’t really comparable.

Is AeroPress coffee or espresso?

The AeroPress is a versatile brewing device, so it's possible to create many kinds of coffee styles. These include espresso style, Americano or even cold brew.

How do you make an AeroPress latte?

To make a latte with an AeroPress, you will need to prepare your AeroPress coffee as espresso style. Then, it's simply a matter of adding warm milk to your coffee. You’ll need a milk frother if you want that perfect latte consistency, though.

How to Make Coffee

Coffee Making FAQs

How do you make coffee step by step?

We have a selection of Brew Guide videos on the website that walk you through the different methods. The most common way to make coffee is using a cafetière or French Press.

First, boil water in a kettle, preferably using filtered water.

Place coarse ground coffee into a cafetière (60g coffee to 1000g water) . Pour hot, but not boiling, water onto the ground coffee until it is fully saturated. Allow to steep for 4 minutes - then stir, breaking the crust that has formed on the surface. Leave to stand for a further 5 minutes during which the coffee should sink/settle.

Place the lid on the cafetière and plunge, this should be smooth and slow (you don’t need to squash the bed of coffee at the bottom of the cafetière). Pour into warmed cups & enjoy.

How to make coffee at home

Head over to the Rave website to watch our Brew Guide Videos.

When making coffee at home, the first step is to ensure that you're using quality coffee beans or ground coffee. If your coffee beans aren't pre-ground, or you don't have a coffee maker with a built-in grinder, you'll need to grind them yourself.

Once you've got your freshly ground coffee, add the required amount to the cafetière (French press). Then fill the cafetière with the required amount of hot water.

Make sure the water isn't completely boiling, as this can often burn the coffee. It can be a good idea to let the water stand for 1 minute after boiling. Make sure you give your coffee enough time to brew, and stir thoroughly to get the full flavour out of your ground coffee. Once your coffee has brewed, it can be a good idea to decant it so as not to over extract the coffee.

If anything we tend not to buy Fairtrade certified coffee as the cost of the certification is really only feasible to larger-scale coffee farms and the smallholder producers we support generally cannot afford the certification and work it entails. ‪It impacts their already very slim if not non-existent margins on the cost of production.‬ By and large we pay well over the Fairtrade price‬.

A recent development is that now the commodity pricing for arabica has exceeded the Fairtrade minimums, there has been less incentive for producers to invest in the model. We believe that farmers deserve and need a higher price for their coffee than even Fairtrade is willing to pay.
