Common Cafetière Questions

What is the difference between a cafetière and a French press?

There is no real difference between a cafetière and a French press; they are simply two names for the same coffee brewing method.

In the UK, it’s commonly referred to as a cafetière, while in other parts of the world, particularly in the US, it’s known as a French press.

Both use the same process: steeping coffee grounds in hot water and then pressing them through a mesh filter to separate the grounds from the brewed coffee.

Is a cafetière as good as a coffee machine?

Coffee taste is a personal thing so there’s no way for us to say whether cafetière or machine coffee is better.

What we can say is that whilst coffee machines are usually quick and convenient, cafetières allow you greater control over the brewing process.

You are able to adjust the strength and flavour of your coffee… and with the right technique, can brew a cup of coffee that rivals any machine.

What should the ratio of coffee to water be in a cafetière?

The perfect coffee:water ratio will depend on how strong you prefer your coffee. It is also impacted by factors such as the size of your cafetière and how many cups you are making.

As a general rule, start with around 15g coffee per person to 250ml water and adjust to your taste. Learn more with our cafetière coffee brew guide.

What type of coffee should I use for a cafetière?

For a cafetière, it's best to use medium to coarser ground coffee. This allows the grounds to steep properly in the water without slipping through the filter.

Freshly ground coffee beans, with a medium roast, tend to produce balanced and flavourful results, but you can experiment with different roasts and blends based on your own personal preference.
