Common V60 Questions

How does the Hario V60 coffee dripper work?

The Hario V60 is a pour-over coffee dripper that uses a cone-shaped design with spiral ridges and a large hole at the bottom.

This design allows for precise control over the brewing process, affecting factors such as water flow rate, extraction time, and coffee strength.

To use it, place a filter inside the dripper, add ground coffee, and slowly pour hot water in a circular motion. The brewed coffee then drips into the cup below.

What size V60 should I get?

The Hario V60 comes in a range of sizes:

- Size 01 makes around 1–2 cups; ideal for personal use

- Size 02 makes around 1–4 cups; ideal for use with family and friends

Choose a size based on how much coffee you typically brew at once.

If you mostly make coffee for yourself, or a partner, size 01 or 02 should suffice.

What type of coffee should I use with the Hario V60?

The V60 works best with high-quality, freshly roasted coffee beans

Light to medium roasts are ideal, as they bring out the flavours that the pour-over method highlights.

Single-origin beans are often preferred as they tend to have more distinct flavour notes, however, you can use any coffee you enjoy.

If you can, look for ‘washed coffee’ as it tends to have lower acidity levels that are perfect for the V60 method.

What grind size should I use with the V60 coffee maker?

A medium-fine grind is recommended for the Hario V60.

The grind should be slightly finer than sea salt but not as fine as espresso.

This allows for a balanced extraction.

Too fine, and the water will flow too slowly, leading to over-extraction; too coarse, and the water will flow too quickly, resulting in under-extraction and weak coffee.

Can I adjust the strength of my coffee using the V60?

Yes, you can adjust the strength of your coffee by tweaking a few key factors:

- Coffee-to-water ratio – Using more coffee per litre of water will make a stronger brew.

- Grind size – A finer grind can slow down extraction and lead to a more intense flavour, while a coarser grind results in a lighter brew.

- Pouring technique – Controlling the speed and consistency of your pour affects extraction. A slower pour can increase strength, while a faster pour can lead to a milder coffee.
