About Guatemala Swiss Water Decaf Nº 292

This dark roasted decaf offers everything a classic coffee lover needs - a punch of chocolatey sweetness, and a long lasting flavour.

The coffee is grown by a group of smallholders in San Antonio Huista, Guatemala. It has typical flavours of this region - caramel, nuts and cocoa - and is ideal for decaffeination.

These flavours shine through despite the extra processing required for a decaf coffee.

The producers of this coffee are all members of the Cooperativa Todosantarita. The group was founded in 1986 with 17 members and this has grown to 131 today. The Co-op has been able to reinvest into the local community by building new roads, a school, library, clinic and improvements to drinking water.

However, recent challenges have caused higher prices for fertilizer, and a loss of available pickers during harvest season. There is growing trend for young people to move away from rural coffee communities to seek work in the cities and abroad. The group is hopeful of changes to this pattern as the price they can earn for their coffee climbs.

Once picked, processed and dried, the coffee is delivered to the Swiss Water decaffeination facility in Canada, where a unique process enables the decaffeination of the coffee using only water. Coffees of the calibre being produced by this Co-op are ideal for decaf processing because they have a strength of flavour and a consistency that is still discernible after decaffeination.

Ash says...

This dark roast is punchy and gives the illusion of 'strength', without the caffeine!
