Finca Santa Elisa is located near San Pedro Yepocapa in Guatemala’s Acatenango region. The 506-hectare farm sits on the slopes of the Sierra Madre mountain range, with around 360 hectares dedicated to coffee. Here, the dormant Acatenango volcano and constantly active Volcán de Fuego shape a landscape of rich volcanic soils, cool temperatures and cloud forest; ideal conditions for growing high-quality speciality coffee.

As one of the larger estates in the region, Santa Elisa is an important source of employment and income for the local community. But despite its size, the farm was struggling in 2017, producing just 700 quintales of coffee cherries. Since then, significant investment and a new approach to farm management have transformed production, with the farm now producing around 34,000 quintales of cherries.

This lot was processed by Los Volcanes Coffee at its Beneficio La Esperanza mill in Antigua. Coffee production here comes with an unusual challenge: ash from nearby volcanic eruptions can settle on the cherries. The fruit needs to be thoroughly washed before processing, as any remaining ash can affect quality and even cause problems with the depulping equipment.
