The Mutheru washing station is part of the Kariua Farmers Cooperative Society—alongside New Irera, Mutitu, and Githaiti—and sits in the highlands of Murang’a County in central Kenya, a region rich in cultural and historical significance and believed to be the birthplace of the Kikuyu community.

Murang’a’s high altitudes (1,600–1,800 masl), abundant rainfall, deep red volcanic soils, and cool temperatures create ideal conditions for high-quality Arabica. Paired with exceptional varieties like SL28 and SL34, this environment produces remarkable cup profiles.

Processing at Mutheru is meticulous and traditional. Only ripe cherries are hand-picked in the morning, sorted, and pulped with clean water in gravity-fed systems. The beans ferment overnight to break down mucilage, then are washed and density-graded in long tiled channels. The highest-quality beans are dried on raised beds with constant monitoring until they reach 10–12% moisture, then bagged and sent to the dry mill.

Mutheru coffee showcases classic Kenyan terroir—bright, complex, and characterful—reflecting the dedication of the Kariua Cooperative farmers and the rich agricultural heritage of Murang’a County.
