Coope Dota, a coffee cooperative in Santa María de Dota, Tarrazú, has been operating since the 1960s and became the world’s first carbon-neutral coffee mill in 2011. Supported by nearly 1,100 local growers, it runs a mill, roastery, shops, and sustainable transport, all measured for environmental impact.

The cooperative reduces its footprint by using compost made from coffee waste and parchment-fueled dryers, aiming for full self-reliance in carbon offsetting. Operations manager Christian Chinchilla oversees everything from large community lots to high-scoring microlots and experimental coffees at Finca El Cedral.
