Last year, we visited Alvaro and his family at Sítio da Torre on our trip to the Mantiquiera region of Brazil. There we saw a very different coffee growing region to the vast and flat homogenous plantations that Brazil is known for. Mantiquiera is high (for Brazil), and the landscape is undulating. Shade canopy is more common and coffee grows in a wild and less orderly way. Therefore the coffee that grows here, is unique too.

The region has achieved its own geographical indication for coffee, as awarded by the Brazilian Speciality Coffee Association, due to the coffee’s distinct acidity and complex flavour profiles. Alvaro’s son, Gustavo, is focusing his attention to the speciality market. The Obata varietal is one that was developed by the Instituto Agronomico (IAC) in 2000. It has the potential to be high yeilding and resistant to leaf-rust, as well as growing well at lower altitudes. It is a relatively new varietal, but is hoped to be one that can help speciality arabicas thrive in new growing regions and through climate change.

Alvaro is a fourth generation farmer who has placed in 29 Cup of Excellence awards! The farmhouse is adorned with framed certificates and trophies that demonstrates their dedication and pride to their industry. This coffee is harvested, then pulped, dried and milled on the farm itself.

Far from typical - this coffee is fruity, complex and bright
