About Brazil Ascarive Nº 323

The producers of Ascarive, a co-operative in the Mantiqueira region of Minas Gerais, are growing coffee in a protected geographical region. The first area in Brazil to qualify due to the distinctive nature of the terroir and the coffees grown here.

The inherent flavour profiles are in many ways classic - think cocoa, roasted nuts and brown sugars. But there is also a subtle acidity, and red fruit sweetness that elevates these particular lots above what is typically expected of Brazilian coffees.

Producers

Smallholders

Grown

Mantiqueira, Minas Gerais

Altitude

900m - 1500m

Varietals

Mixed (Acaia, Bourbon, Catuai, IAC, Mundo Novo)

This coffee is produced by 45 members of the Ascarive group. The altitudes are varied and sloping, making mechanisation impossible here. Unlike the stereotype of coffee farming in Brazil, this region is populated by smallholdings and hand-harvesting is common, if not essential.

This lot is processed using the traditional natural method. Coffee cherries are picked, sorted and dried on patios with regular raking and turning. Unlike ‘naturals’ from other producing countries, these are rich, smooth and chocolatey - and well suited to a variety of brew styles and roast levels.
