We visited the producers of El Carmen, in the breath taking landscape of Huila, southern Colombia, and the farm of William Cruz (a member of El Carmen) and toured his farm and processing facilities.
William supplied one of our favourite coffees from the Rare range last year. We talked about the struggles he is facing to produce coffees of this type as he has only a small amount of flat space on which to dry his coffee.
We walked among the pink bourbon varietals, tasting the sweet floral cherry fruit, and smelling the jasmine-like blossom.William sells much of his coffee to the collective El Carmen, and after our visit to his farm, we joined the other El Carmen producers and cupped coffees in the local town. It was an opportunity to cup El Carmen as well as the coffees from the individual smallholders who contribute to this lot. We discussed our long-standing relationships with this coffee, and why it has been such a favourite with our customers.
