Farm Notes:

Coope Dota is a coffee processing mill and facility located in the small town of Santa María de Dota, dating back to the 1960s. Supported by just under 1,100 surrounding coffee growers in the heart of the Tarrazú region, this mill became the first in the world to earn the title of Carbon Neutral back in 2011, a remarkable feat!

In addition to the coffee production mill, they also own and operate their own roastery and shops, where they sell goods that members of the cooperative might need for day-to-day life. These are run to the same sustainability standards as the mill, contributing to the overall carbon footprint measurement and bringing in additional income for the cooperative. Even the transportation of the sold coffee, from the mill to the port, is accounted for in their environmental efforts.

On the farm itself, they produce rich compost from coffee waste and use parchment to fuel the dryers, which were specifically built for this purpose. These initiatives help them reduce their carbon impact from start to finish in the coffee production process. All of this supports their goal of becoming completely self-reliant in offsetting their carbon footprint.

Coope Dota is a pioneering coffee mill that’s been thriving since the 1960s, supported by nearly 1,100 local growers. In 2011, it made history as the world’s first carbon-neutral coffee mill—a title earned through impressive sustainability efforts, from using coffee waste for compost to fuelling dryers with recycled parchment. This dark roasted coffee is rich is cocoa, baked apple and butter candy.

After harvest, cherries undergo a precise process of semi-dry pulping, fermentation, and controlled drying before export.
