TRADITIONAL

    Nº 176 Peru Cajamarca Regional

    Country: Northern Highlands, Peru
    Process: Washed
    Grown / Region: Cajamarca
    Altitude: 900m - 1950m
    Varietals: Typica, Caturra and Borubon
    Producers: Volcafe Way Producers
Tasting Notes: Cocoa, Golden Raisin, Muscovado Sugar
    Roast Level: Dark 5/5

    FARM NOTES:

This regional lot is part of importer Volcafe's large-scale project in the region. Despite relatively small farm sizes and infrastructure issues, the coffee in this region is typically sweet with great body and yellow stone fruit notes. This Peruvian is tasting like cocoa and golden raisin, with the deep sweetness of muscovado sugar. This coffee is structured and thick which means it works stunningly with milk - think fruit and nut chocolate bar.

Volcafe Way project is all about improving farms from the ground up, helping producers grow through technical intervention and building the capacity and running individual and group training. They also work on social impact schemes, like agricultural study scholarships and contribute towards (at the time of writing this) building 10 schools in 3 coffee-growing regions in Peru.

    DISCOVERY

    Nº 175 Colombia Villamaría

    Country: Villamaría, Caldas
    Process: Washed
    Altitude: 1800m
    Varietals: Variedad Colombia, Castillo Naranjal
Producers: 30 - 50 producing families around Villarazo
Tasting Notes: Raspberry, Milk Chocolate, Pear Drops
    Roast Level: Medium 3/5

    FARM NOTES:

Villamaría Association consists of some 30-50 families in the surrounding area of Villarazo. The lots used are delivered to the buying point Finca La Aurora, and processed there or at the Villamaría drying station in Jamaica, Caldas.  This association is continuing to grow as its system ensures better prices for reduced labour as they can sell unprocessed cherries to Aurora, a relatively uncommon practice in Colombia. This Washed coffee is clean and consistent with notes of raspberry, milk chocolate and pear drops - this one was a must-buy for us!

Our coffee club discovery subscription for March was this fantastic washed coffee from Villamaría located in the Colombian coffee growing axis.

Villamaría's processing station, Jamaica, has great climate for processing as it's around 300m lower in altitude than the farms themselves. It also has good capacity due to the space available.
