Here is our perfect recipe making the OG Irish Coffee with the best Rave coffee to pair with it too. If you want to read all about the history of Irish Coffee head over to our piece on that but if you just want to know how to make the original Irish Coffee, read on...
Joe Sheridan, the drink's supposed inventor, was said to have described the ingredients you’ll need as:
Coffee: Strong as a friendly hand.
(we suggest using our China Banka No 277 for its delicate floral notes OR Guatemala Bosques De San Francisco as a nod to the Irish Coffee’s heritage and for its chocolate and toffee notes)
Whiskey: Smooth as the wit of the land.
(Powers Gold Label Irish Whiskey to go with the tradition)
Cream: Rich as an Irish brogue.
(Heavy whipping cream)
Brown or Muscovado Sugar: Sweet as the tongue of a rogue.
(we suggest cubes)
Directions
-
Add boiling water to your glass of choice to allow the glass to warm up
-
Brew 200 ml of coffee in a separate glass- for this we suggest using a drip method like Chemex or V60 to compliment the smooth whiskey.
-
Dump out the water from your glass
-
Toss in 2 sugar cubes or 8 grams of sugar
-
Add in your coffee and your single shot of whiskey - stir to combine
-
Whip heavy cream until peaks start to form
-
Layer the cream on top by slowly pouring over the backside of a spoon
-
Garnish with a coffee bean or three (not from the original recipe but looks great)
-
Enjoy ☘️
