Every September, the UK comes together to support Macmillan Cancer Support through their annual Coffee Morning event.

Known as the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, this fundraising campaign has become a nationwide tradition. People from all walks of life host their own coffee mornings and make donations to help those affected by cancer.

As significant coffee enthusiasts ourselves, we can’t miss an opportunity to rave about this charity. Below, we look at the history of the Macmillan Coffee Morning and explore how you can get involved.

What is the Macmillan Coffee Morning?

The Macmillan Coffee Morning is the charity's biggest fundraising event, bringing together millions of people across the UK to raise money for cancer support. The concept is simple: host a coffee morning, invite your friends, family, or colleagues, and ask for donations in exchange for a cuppa and a slice of something delicious. The event usually takes place on the last Friday of September each year, with the next one scheduled for September 27th, 2024.

The History of the Macmillan Coffee Morning

The Macmillan Coffee Morning was born in 1990. The event proved so effective that it was repeated the following year, this time on a national scale. Since then, the Coffee Morning has grown into the largest and longest-standing fundraiser for people facing cancer in the UK.

How Can You Take Part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning?

There are two main ways to participate in the Macmillan Coffee Morning: hosting your own event or attending one in your local community.

Hosting a Macmillan Coffee Morning

It’s simple to become a host for a Coffee Morning. Just follow these steps:

  1. Sign up and fill in the registration form on their website.
  2. Choose a date (you can change it again), where you will host the event (home, work, or school), and which fundraising kit you want. The kit contains everything you need, including recipes, a collection box, event posters, and even a game for your event.
  3. After registration, you can access your online fundraising page. You can personalise it with photos and your event details.
  4. Make arrangements for drinks, food, games, and different donation methods.
  5. Have fun on the day!

Remember, your Coffee Morning can be as big or small as you like – every donation makes a difference.

Attending a Macmillan Coffee Morning

If hosting isn't your thing, you can still get involved by attending a Coffee Morning in your area. People hold public events all over the UK, so keep an eye out for posters in community centres, cafés, pubs, schools, hospitals, and sports clubs. It's the perfect chance to catch up with friends, enjoy a cuppa and a slice of cake, and support a great cause.

Creative Macmillan Coffee Morning Ideas

While the traditional coffee morning is always a hit, there are plenty of creative ways to put your own spin on the event. Here are a few ideas to inspire you:

  • Host a themed coffee morning, such as a vintage tea party or a world cuisine celebration
  • Organise a bake sale with homemade treats, both sweet and savoury
  • Plan a virtual coffee morning using video conferencing platforms to connect with friends and family from afar
  • Incorporate fun activities like a raffle, quiz, or fancy dress competition to engage your guests and raise even more money

Previous out-of-the-box coffee mornings included kitchen discos, chai afternoons, a drag show cocktail evening, and dog-friendly events.

The Impact of Your Support for Macmillan Cancer Support

The money collected through the Macmillan Coffee Morning makes a tremendous difference in the lives of people affected by cancer. Your donations help fund vital services, including:

  • Macmillan nurses who provide essential medical, practical, and emotional support to people living with cancer
  • Financial grants to help with the extra costs that often come with a cancer diagnosis
  • Support lines and online resources offering advice and information to those navigating cancer treatment and recovery

In 2023 alone, Macmillan raised an incredible £18,041,302, highlighting the power of communities coming together for a common cause.
