Coffee farming in the southern Mexican states is under many pressures. The climate here is cool, and coffee cherries develop slowly and sweetly. However, yields are low and producers can struggle to make ends meet.
Our partnership with Raw Material, who assist in the sourcing and exportation of this coffee, has brought this excellent coffee to our attention. These remote producers now have access to the global speciality market, and are paid up to 10 times what they can earn through local buyers!
The region is vulnerable to outward migration. The next generation of coffee farmers are moving to major cities in Mexico and the US in search of more financial stability, and this creates real uncertainty for the future of coffee farming. However, now there are more sustainable routes to market, and higher premiums paid, coffee production is becoming more viable.
The producers in the Yoloxochitlán region are working in remote and steep landscapes that make harvest season particularly gruelling. But small scale agriculture has been the foundation of the indigenous community and its culture for centuries.
There is a great appreciation of the land, ancestry and local traditions.
