Popular AeroPress Mods and Accessories

Reusable Metal Filters

One of the most popular AeroPress accessories is the reusable metal filter. While the AeroPress comes with paper filters, many coffee drinkers prefer the taste and eco-friendliness of a metal filter.

A reusable metal filter allows more of the coffee's natural oils and micro-grounds to pass through, resulting in a richer, more full-bodied cup of coffee. Plus, you'll save money and reduce waste by not constantly purchasing paper filters.

To use a metal filter, simply replace the paper filter with the metal one and brew as usual. Be sure to use a slightly coarser grind size to avoid clogging the metal filter.

The Inverted Method

The inverted method is a popular AeroPress hack that involves brewing with the AeroPress upside down. This trick allows for a longer steep time and more control over the brewing process.

To use the inverted method:

  1. Insert the plunger into the AeroPress from the wide side, stopping just below the "4" mark.
  2. Stand the AeroPress upside down on a stable surface with the plunger at the bottom.
  3. Add your coffee grounds and hot water, stirring gently.
  4. Place the filter cap (with a filter) on top and let the coffee steep for your desired brew time.
  5. Carefully flip the AeroPress onto your mug and press as usual.

The inverted method is great for experimenting with different brew times and ratios to find your perfect cup.

The Bloom and Bypass Method

The bloom and bypass method achieves a cleaner cup with less bitterness from your AeroPress. It involves a two-stage pouring process that focuses on optimising extraction. Here's how to do it:

  1. Grind your coffee beans to a medium grind. Aim for consistency and remember to use a coarser grind with a metal filter.
  2. Add your desired amount of coffee grounds to the AeroPress chamber. A good starting point is 15-17 grams for a single serving.
  3. Start your timer and pour just enough hot water (around 90-96°C or 195-205°F) to saturate the grounds. This is the "bloom" stage. Aim to barely cover the grounds.
  4. Gently stir the coffee grounds to ensure even saturation. Let the coffee bloom for 30 seconds.
  5. Here comes the bypass part. Slowly pour the remaining water in a circular motion, aiming to bypass the settled coffee grounds. This helps to avoid over-extracting the bitter elements.
  6. After pouring all the water, place the filter cap on the AeroPress and press slowly and steadily.

Cold Brew with AeroPress

Yes, AeroPress isn’t just for hot coffee—it can also make a delicious cold brew! This method relies on immersion brewing, where coarse coffee grounds steep in cold water for an extended period.

Try these cold brew steps:

  1. Use a coarse grind size for cold brew. The texture should resemble sea salt.
  2. Add your desired amount of coffee grounds to an airtight container. A good starting point is a 1:5 ratio of coffee grounds to water.
  3. Pour your cold water into the container and stir gently to ensure all the grounds are saturated.
  4. Seal the container and refrigerate it for 12-24 hours, depending on the desired strength.
  5. After steeping, filter the cold brew concentrate using your AeroPress. Press slowly and steadily to separate the coffee from the grounds.
  6. Dilute the cold brew concentrate with cold water or milk to your preference.

DIY AeroPress Funnel

If you've ever struggled with spillage while transferring coffee grounds into your AeroPress, this simple DIY hack is for you.

An AeroPress funnel makes it easy to neatly pour your coffee into the brewer without any mess.

To make your own AeroPress funnel:

  1. Cut the top off a plastic water bottle (choose a bottle with a wide mouth that fits snugly into the AeroPress).
  2. Remove the bottle cap and cut the bottle to your desired funnel height.
  3. Place the funnel into the AeroPress and pour your coffee grounds through it.
  4. Remove the funnel and continue with your normal brewing process.

This simple trick is an easy way to streamline your AeroPress brewing routine and keep your workspace tidy.

Storing and Travelling with Your Modified AeroPress

One of the best things about the AeroPress is its portability. Whether you're camping, travelling, or simply brewing coffee at work, the AeroPress is a compact and durable option.

However, if you've modified your AeroPress with additional accessories, these tips and tricks can help you store and transport everything efficiently:

  • Use a small, airtight container to store your AeroPress and accessories when not in use. This will keep everything clean and prevent any damage.
  • If you're travelling with your AeroPress, consider investing in a protective carrying case. Many options are available online, ranging from simple neoprene sleeves to hard-shell cases with custom foam inserts.
  • When packing your AeroPress for travel, be sure to disassemble it and store each component separately to avoid damage or warping.
  • If you're using a reusable metal filter, consider bringing along a small brush or cleaning tool to keep it clean and free of coffee oils.
