About Mexico Paraje Los Machos Nº 124

Let’s not burrito around the bush - this coffee is delicious. We've roasted it slightly lighter than the last crop we had in 2020.

Whilst Mexico is a global powerhouse of an economy, and geographically well placed to produce quality coffee, the yields here are relatively low. The farmers of Los Machos typically farm up to only one hectare of coffee each!

These lots are then combined, and showcase the quality of this micro region. Expect a milk chocolate sweetness with notes of hazelnut and spiced vanilla.

Coffee production in Mexico has seen a steep decline in recent years. Leaf rust disease and a lack of means with which to cope with this has caused many farms to abandon coffee, switch to other crops, or simply seen their yeilds plummit. Previously, the producers of Los Machos have sold their coffee in parchment (un-milled) to middle men paying minimum market prices. However, in the last few years the interventions from our partners on the ground, Raw Material, has brought financial security to these farmers and has paid premiums for quality. Raw act as a non profit enterprise in Mexico (as well as other origins), and encourage producers to move towards producing speciality grade coffee, and reward them for this by guaranteed up front payments and secondary premium based payments. Under this model a producer can increase their house hold income by around 10 times!

Los Machos has become a regular feature on our coffee lists. This year, yields have been low but exceptional in quality!
